Choreography Devices

As a group we have now began to choreograph the piece and included a diverse range of different choreographic devices. We begin by using formation and standing in a group clumped together. We move as a whole to represent the brain in the stimulus working as a one object. We then continue moving on using pathways; individually parting from the group, constituting a different emotion as seen on the stimulus as the emojis shoot out portraying a business and overcrowding in the brain. This therefore causing a stressful atmosphere. This creates a split focus as everyone is moving in different ways and dancing with varying intention. We continue to use spilt focus when there is a group in the centre dancing on a higher level and then people surrounding them moving on a lower level, to link back to our idea of Dissociative Identity disorder (DID) and representing the two personalities. We have also decided to use cannon a lot as it fits extremely well with the music and it also links back to the stimulus as it shows all the emojis/emotions bursting out at separate times but they are all coming from the brain so doing the same thing. As well as linking to the theme of DID and feeling isolated and distanced from your own brain, which causes separation. This is definitely emphasized through the parted cannon movements.

Throughout the piece there have been lots of devices used because of previous movements. For instance when we use split focus that naturally lead us on the thinking about using mirroring as it was split stage and then everyone can join together yet still be separate just distanced from each other and "split" away. Also, the thoughts of individual pathways lead us to an idea of non-contact collisions, in which we rebound of another person and their emotion without physically touching them.

I think that during the rest of the choreographic piece we will continue to use a range of devices to ensure the audience immerse themselves completely into the piece and the meaning behind it so they really experience the true pain someone with DID can endure.

One of the choreographic devices we used and had problems with was the mirroring, as we had to turn towards each other, it looked messy and uncontrolled so, eventually we had to change it and just run into our next formation so the dance overall looked sharper.

  1. Hi Portia, great blog post! Just something to think about, do you think that there is any issues that could come up with the choreography so far? I love that you have linked everything back to the original stimulus too.

  2. Hi Portia, another amazing blog well done, something to think about is have any of the choreographic devices not worked for the group, have they been unsuccessful, if so has it caused any issues with the group piece. I hope this helps!

  3. I love how you have described the brain at the start of the blog. I think to improve it would be great if you talked about how the choreographic devises might help inspire you within the piece further down in the piece. But I also love how you have talked about what canon means and represents in the piece.

  4. Hi Portia great blog post. In the second to last paragraph where you say previous movements try and be specific as to what those movements are.

  5. I think it is a great post where you are able to explain why you have used certain chorepgraphic devices to represent your idea and convey you message to the audience. Like your peers I think it would be interesting to talk about any devices or movements/ formations that didnt work and why that might be. In the last paragraph maybe you could suggest what devices you might use and why. If there are any photos or videos that demonstrate what you are talking about within your blog that would really help communicate to the reader why you have made these decisions.
